Super Value Taiwan Porridge Buffet at Crystal Cafe

On the recent public holiday, the family went to Crystal Cafe at Orchard Grand Court Hotel (Killiney Road).  Mum was quite excited having enjoyed her previous visits.

For the amazingly affordable price of $15.80+ (cheaper on weekday lunches), the variety and quality of food it amazing!  I love the braised pig trotters and chicken feet (so good you can drink the sauce), sweet potato porridge, smooth steamed eggs, preserved vegetables, preserved tofu (aiyoh so smelly and so nice, a la chinese blue cheese), the chili (loved how they do a rough mince of garlic which bites right through), and for dessert that day, there was a special treat of durian pengat.    Even though I am not a durian lover, the durian pengat was very sedap – well-chilled, fresh and full of durian flavour. Thumbs up 🙂

I’m not going to say too much more about the food, let the pics do the talking!

Crystal Cafe - feng zao

Crystal Cafe - Preserved eggs

Crystal Cafe - Pork Trotters 1

Crystal Cafe - Pork Trotters 2

Crystal Cafe - Porridge

Crystal Cafe - Condiments

Crystal Cafe - Mains 1

Crystal Cafe - Mains 3

Crystal Cafe - dessert

Unfortunately the pic of the durian pengat looked like a tub of yeast fermenting so I decided not to post it… but it was really good 🙂 According to the manager, they do not always have it on the menu, which made it all the more a special treat!

Note: The style of cooking here is such that all the foods have a lighter 口味 (flavour/taste) as compared to what we get at a typical Teochew porridge stall.

My rating 9/10 (range of quality dishes at this price, clean and comfortable environment, staff quick to remove plates)
