Ultimate Hawker Fest 2014. Celebrating our Heritage & our Future, all for a Good Cause

I have always admired my friends for taking part in marathons, biathlon & triathlons to raise money for charity (and maybe bragging rights).  Well, no matter how I have tried to motivate myself, it is really not for me.  But, how about a “food marathon” for charity?  Ahhh…. Count me in!

This year, TOUCH Community Services’ popular Ultimate Hawker Fest returns for the third year with a unique focus on celebrating Singapore’s Hawker Heritage, as part of Singapore’s Jubilee (SG50) celebrations.

“From the satay peddler along the streets of yesteryears to today’s chicken rice stall in hawker centres, there is much to reminisce of Singapore’s Hawker heritage. Being Singaporean is about not minding the queue for our favourite nasi lemak and sharing a meal at our neighbourhood hawker centre with people we don’t know. We believe that it is important to mark SG50 by celebrating the contributions of those in the culinary sector”, said Mr James Tan, TOUCH’s Deputy Executive Director.

UHF 2014 will feature celebrity food bloggers Maureen Ow  (Miss Tam Chiak), Derrick Tan (SgFoodOnFoot) and Ian Low (TheSilverChef), who have combined their gourmet expertise to bring together more than 20 chefs to create the Ultimate menu.

Covering a floor area of 6,110sqm, the best of Singapore’s hawker culture will be showcased in three food zones namely Ultimate Original Recipe [食代相传], Ultimate Pursuit of Happiness [食膳为心] and Ultimate Ingredients [食材科举].

Ultimate Original Recipe honours the heritage of pioneer generation hawkers through stalls helmed by chefs from the second, third and fourth generations of pioneers. From yummy carrot cake (I ditch my diet for that!) to my favourite Ke Ai Ji Fried Chicken (the Coleslaw is full of home made goodness), you must not miss these delicious goodness starting from very affordable prices of $5!

Ultimate Pursuit of Happiness zone features budding chefs and hawkers who have been driven by their passion for food to leave jobs in other sectors to join the culinary industry. Look forward to traditional fishball & prawn noodles, nasi lemak, mee siam pie with a twist (I’m heading straight to this queue), achar,  Chendol and Durian Mango and more! Come and support this new generation of “time keepers of heritage food”!

Ultimate Pursuit of Happinesse

Ultimate Ingredients zone, a mainstay of previous editions of UHF, will once again showcase traditional fare made with the finest ingredients to create ‘ultimate’ versions of their original dishes.  Featuring the famous Tian Tian Chicken Rice, Prata Place (grew up with that!), Mr Bean (with extra touches), and many more unique stalls, do not miss this if you like that extra special ingredients (only on 22 Nov’14!) to delight your palate.
