It is really nice to see how Clifford Pier has transformed from the old days of day trip boats to the neighboring islands, to an very spacious and elegant hall. Loved the high ceilings, arches and ornate chandeliers. There is a also a jazz band that plays in the evening, a nice chi-chi way to wind down at the end of the day.
Unfortunately I had forgotten to take pics of the surroundings (which you can find online anyway), so … straight to the food! We ordered the Kueh Pie Tee, Char Kway Teow and the Pier Lobster Roll.
We started with the Kueh Pie Tee. The batter cup is not oily and I thought the quail’s egg was a quite cute. However flavour-wise the radish filling was rather timid and could do with heavier broth flavor.
Next up, the Char Kway Teow. Found it very oily, and no wok hei. More like home-style stir fried noodles. I did appreciate the generous portion of bok choy though, and the prawns were done well. Alot of portion control going on to, avoiding the over-indulgence we get into when eating at a hawker centre.
The highlight of our evening was the Pier Lobster Roll. Generous serving of actual fresh lobster in mayo, wrapped in a lightly toasted brioche, with a hot serving of truffle fries.. yum!
Wines are considerably expansive here (eg Cloudy Bay at $148), so be prepared to take a hit on the pocket if you enjoy vino with dinner, and also a long wait.
Clifford Pier is a great place for that special occasion, to enjoy the wonderful decor and view (especially at night), but probably not for regular dining. Judging by the long cab queue outside the hotel, you might also want to standby your favorite taxi application just before leaving, or faster to walk the the nearest MRT to head back home.
